HIGHS AND LOWS- The Christmas season is a beautiful time of celebration, but it's also an opportunity for spiritual growth, reflection, and peace. If you feel exhausted after the holidays, know that you're not alone, and there are practical steps you can take to recover and reset.
VIParts of this episode to refer to:
Key Takeaways
Anticipation Creates Excitement: The lead-up to Christmas is filled with hope and joy, as we prepare for something wonderful.
The Post-Christmas Crash Is Normal: The drop in excitement after Christmas is a physiological and emotional response that many people experience.
We Need Rest and Reflection: Both physically and spiritually, Christmas can take a lot out of us. It’s important to rest, recharge, and reflect on the true meaning of the season.
Listener Challenge: After the excitement of Christmas is over, take time to reflect on three things you’re grateful for and share this with someone in your life. Celebrate Christ intentionally by reading a scripture or attending a worship service during Advent. Plan something joyful for the week after Christmas to ease the post-holiday lull.

280-Reconciling Crisis in Spirit, Soul, and Body
Friday Nov 22, 2024
Friday Nov 22, 2024
HOPE IN THE STORM- Let's explore the dynamics of being a triune being—body, soul, and spirit—during times of crisis and trauma. Learn how to reconcile the tension between your spirit, rooted in divine truth, and your soul, which may be grappling with pain, grief, or fear. Through scripture, reflection, and practical steps, discover how to anchor yourself in God's presence, even in the midst of life’s storms.
Three Key Takeaways:
Understanding the Triune Nature of Humanity:We are made up of spirit (our connection to God), soul (mind, will, emotions, personality), and body. While our spirit holds eternal truths, our soul and body often react to external circumstances. It’s normal for them to feel out of sync, but anchoring ourselves in the spirit brings alignment and peace.
The Role of Free Will in Suffering:Suffering exists because of free will, given to humanity so we could choose love and relationship with God. Even amidst pain, God’s ultimate plan of redemption offers hope and an eternal perspective beyond our present hardships.
Encouragement for the Soul in Crisis:Condemnation is not from God. While conviction lovingly calls us toward Him, shame pushes us away. By leaning into God’s truth, allowing the spirit to lead, and practicing intentional acts of faith—like speaking scripture over your life—we can navigate the emotional storms with peace and hope.
Listener Challenge:This week, reflect on Psalm 23:6: "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life." Write it down, set it as a reminder on your phone, or speak it aloud daily. Allow this truth to be written on your heart. As you meditate on it, journal how it changes your perspective in difficult moments.

279-Top 10 Things to NOT Say to Someone in Crisis
Friday Nov 01, 2024
Friday Nov 01, 2024
HOPE IN THE STORM-
Let’s explore how to truly support someone in crisis by understanding what not to say. Even well-meaning words can unintentionally hurt or create distance when someone is going through an intense, personal struggle. By avoiding certain phrases and focusing on empathy, we can offer genuine comfort that doesn’t inadvertently invalidate their experience.
Key Takeaways:
Avoid Minimizing Language – Phrases like “It could be worse” or “Everything happens for a reason” can feel dismissive and minimize the person’s experience. Instead, validate their pain by acknowledging the difficulty of their situation.
Offer Tangible Support – Saying “Let me know how I can help” often puts the burden on the person in crisis. Instead, offer specific help, like cooking a meal, running errands, or simply being present.
Focus on Listening, Not Fixing – Sometimes, trying to “fix” the situation with positive thinking or comparisons can be counterproductive. Simply listening and letting the person express their emotions can be the most supportive thing you can do. Learn how to get comfortable with negative emotions so you don’t feel the need to ‘fix’ the moment or the person.
Listener Challenge: Next time someone you know is facing a crisis, practice empathy without giving advice or solutions. Instead, try asking questions like, “How are you feeling right now?” or “Would you like to talk more about it?” Make space for their emotions without attempting to guide them toward a “silver lining.”

Key Takeaways
Survivor’s Guilt and Its ManifestationsSurvivor’s guilt can include intrusive thoughts, sadness, shame, anxiety, and sometimes physical symptoms. Recognizing these signs can be the first step in working toward healing and understanding that these reactions are part of processing trauma.
Healing Through Self-Compassion and SupportHealing requires acknowledging your emotions, reaching out for support, and extending self-compassion. A support network can offer unique perspectives and help you release feelings of guilt and self-blame.
Finding Comfort in Biblical TruthsPassages like Psalm 34:18 remind us that God is close to the brokenhearted, offering comfort and a sense of purpose even when emotions seem overwhelming. Recognizing that we are part of God’s larger plan can provide peace and hope to move forward.
Listener Challenge

277-Healing Compassion Fatigue
Monday Oct 21, 2024
Monday Oct 21, 2024
HOPE IN THE STORM- Let's continue our journey of finding hope in the storm, specifically focusing on healing from compassion fatigue. We discussed how to recognize the signs of compassion fatigue and now explore the critical steps to healing from it. Whether you are a professional caregiver, parent, or simply someone who finds themselves giving too much for too long, this episode is for you.
Acknowledge and Accept Compassion FatigueSelf-awareness is the first step to healing. Recognizing that you are experiencing compassion fatigue allows you to begin processing through it. Understanding that it's not a personal failure but rather a result of caring too much for too long is critical to beginning recovery.
Set Boundaries and Practice Self-CareCompassion fatigue often stems from a lack of personal boundaries. It's essential to distinguish between what is your responsibility to care for and what is not. Establishing healthy boundaries and prioritizing self-care—from rest and hobbies to emotional and physical recovery—is crucial for restoration.
Reconnect with Your ‘Why’Reflect on the deeper reasons why you care in the first place. Remembering your initial motivation for caregiving can help reignite the sense of purpose and fulfillment in your role. This can serve as a buffer against compassion fatigue and help you stay connected to the satisfaction that caregiving can bring.
Listener Challenge:
Take 15 minutes today to reflect on what areas in your life may be contributing to compassion fatigue. Write down one boundary you can set and one act of self-care you will implement this week. Whether it's taking a break, getting outside, or saying no to extra responsibilities, commit to restoring balance in your life.

276-Recognizing Compassion Fatigue
Thursday Oct 10, 2024
Thursday Oct 10, 2024
HOPE IN THE STORM- In this episode, we dive into the critical topic of compassion fatigue—what it is and how to identify it. Compassion fatigue is the emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion many caregivers face when exposed to prolonged distress. Whether you're a healthcare worker, first responder, parent, or caregiver, understanding this concept is essential for maintaining both personal well-being and the quality of care you provide.
Listener Challenge:
Take time this week to assess whether you’re experiencing any symptoms of compassion fatigue. Reflect on how much care you’re giving to others versus the time you’re taking to recharge yourself. Start by implementing one small act of self-care every day—whether it’s taking a walk, eating a nutritious meal, or setting a boundary to protect your energy.
Additionally, observe those around you—friends, coworkers, or family members—who may also be struggling with compassion fatigue. Consider offering a listening ear or practical help. Sometimes, just being there for someone can make a huge difference.
